Lack of Recent Updates

New Site Coming... Soon?

published: February 12, 2010

Apologies for the lack of recent updates, I've been rather busy! First off we have the new uCONVERT website (designed and created in Wordpress in around 4 days!) as well as the recent release of uCONVERT 2.2.0. Then we have the fact that I'm moving this site from my current custom built CMS to Wordpress (I just don't have enough time to maintain admin features). The design is almost finished (although knowing me it'll be completely changed 3 times before I finally settle on it) and the Wordpress is theme is approaching completion, the main problem is how to port to old content to the ne…

Internet Explorer 8 - Close But No Cigar

No downloads manager. In 2009?

published: December 29, 2009

Just thought I'd share a gripe of mine. I usually use Firefox for web-browsing (I know someone is going to suggest Google Chrome, but for now it has one too many rendering issues) but on the occasion I do fire IE8, especially if using a Microsoft site as they still don't quite seem to have got the W3C model of the web. On to the point - I needed to download a file using IE, and this is where Microsoft's clueless-ness as to browser design really shows up. The Download File box has not changed one bit since IE6 (okay it has a new animation) yet somehow they found time to implement a load of …

Games for Windows Live - Another Microsoft Failure?

Experience Rating 1.0

published: December 29, 2009

A few days ago I was notified Windows had installed new updates (this is on Windows 7 Professional). Generally I ignore the message but I took a look and saw one new update, 'Games for Windows - Live', had been installed. Now I generally expect security updates to go unnoticed, I even prefer it that way, but new features and programs? I'd like to at least be told what they are and what they do before they get installed on my machine. Curious (and slightly annoyed) I cranked open the start menu and launched the App. What I saw next surprised me - the app looks almost exactly like Windows Li…

Flash Tutorial - Create a dynamic star-field using attachMovie

ActionScript 2 goodness

published: October 9, 2009

One of the most useful features of Flash is the ability to attach MovieClips to the stage. This allows you to create relatively complex on-screen animations without dragging and dropping lots of objects onto the stage, and instead using a little ActionScript. In the following tutorial we'll create a dynamic star-field background effect. You'll be able to customize the number of stars, speed, and angle. In a follow-up I'll show you how to use these to make a little game. Even better we'll be coding most of it using classes, so you'll be able to use it in a project with around only 3 lines o…

LaTeX it's about time to die

XML anyone?

published: October 6, 2009

Studying physics, I get to use LaTeX quite a bit producing reports and articles. In case you don't what LaTeX is, it's essentially a markup language (somewhat akin to HTML, except for the TeX typesetting system) where you place your content into semantic structures. This is then formatted by essentially the same thing as a CSS stylesheet. It allows you to just worry about getting the content right, and the formatting is done for you. Once you've added all the content, you can switch your document from a Book style layout to a report with a single command. For some reason lot's of people th…
